Normoglycemia was defined as having a fasting glucose <5.7 mmol/l, a 2-h post-load glucose of <7.8, a glycated haemoglobin level of <42 mmol/mol, and a value <2.39 or more for the homeostasis model assessment of estimated insulin resistance. Those with known or newly diagnosed diabetes (i.e. a fasting glucose ≥7.0 mmol/l, a 2-h post-load glucose ≥11.0 mmol/l, and/or a haemoglobin (Hb)-A1c level ≥48 mmol/mol) were excluded from the study.
