Abstract
Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a heterogeneous disorder, associated with deficits in motivation (e.g., delay aversion) and cognition. Methylphenidate is recommended as a first line treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, but little is known about its nonacute effects on motivational and cognitive deficits, particularly in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.Entities:

Abbreviations: ASRS,Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale; AISRS,Adult ADHD Investigator Symptom Rating Scale; MINI,The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview; -,no statistical analysis undertaken.
Parental education was rated on a scale of 1 to 3 for the parent with the highest education, 1 indicates higher education.
The most common psychiatric disorders were: any anxiety disorder, n=18; suicidality, n=8 (no current suicidal ideation); dissocial personality disorder, n=8; depression, n=4. One control participant screened positive for depression.
One missing data point.
Range of estimated IQ at baseline for patients was 68 to 123; only 1 patient had an estimated IQ <70.
The scale was used as an additional measure after commencement of the study, and there are missing data points for the first participants (baseline, n=9; follow-up, n=4).
