Summary of studies analyzing e-cigarettes stories.
| Study | Year | Advantages (Main Results) | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rooke et al. [ | 2014 |
Newspaper coverage of ENDS increased. Five key themes emerged from the analysis: getting around smokefree legislation; risk and uncertainty; healthier choice; celebrity use; price. | This study only report on a sample of 12 national UK and Scottish newspapers. |
| Yates et al. [ | 2015 |
The topics of the articles have shifted over time, indicating major disparities between news and opinion items. pieces. Informative articles focused on e-cigarette legislation, while opinion pieces discussed its growing popularity and perceived health benefits. |
The analysis includes the relatively small number of opinion pieces. The search conducted on Newsbank only retrieved articles with“electronic cigarettes” in the headline, so alternative names would have been excluded. |
| Wackowski et al. [ | 2018 |
Articles focused primarily on e-cigarette policy/regulatory issues, e-cigarette prevalence and health effects. Concerns about youth were raised frequently, including the surge in youth e-cigarette usage, gateway to smoking potential and appeal of flavors. Youth e-cigarette prevalence was more frequently mentioned than adult prevalence in articles discussing FDA regulation. - Potential e-cigarette hazards and concerns were cited more frequently in news articles than benefits. | The limitation includes analysis of only one year of data. |
| Sun et al. [ | 2018 |
E-cigarettes have not received enough attention in terms of its salience in the media. Around May of each year, when the WHO’s No Tobacco Day occurs, a substantial portion of the articles are released. The results point to four major themes on E-cigarettes: nicotine/constituents/features, tobacco control/regulation, children’s use of E-cigarettes, and tobacco market/industry |
This study cannot capture viewpoints from other communication outlets, particularly social media platforms. |
| Wackowski et al. [ | 2020 |
The number of articles increased Articles focused on policy/regulation, health effects, and prevalence/trends. Discussion about flavor bans quadrupled and discussion of youth e-cigarette use was most prevalent in 2018, coinciding with an increase in coverage about JUUL. -News stories more frequently mentioned e-cigarette risks than potential benefits. | It is limited to unique articles in a sample of US publications. |
| Lyu et al. [ | 2021 |
The policy frame was revealed to be the most commonly used frame, followed by human impact frame, information frame, and uncertainty frame. The frequency of the information frame decreased, while the policy frame and uncertainty frame increased, with the policy frame being the dominant frame. The use of the economic frame and morality frame fluctuated, decreasing in the most recent phase. The tone of the most news articles was unfavorable. | Emphasis is placed on the impact of regulations on e-cigarette news content. |
| Kang et al. [ | 2021 |
The most salient argument in the US and UK was that e-cigarettes are less harmful (or “safer”) than regular cigarettes. Although both US and UK news recognized e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, portrayed them in a negative light. The dominant argument in Korean media was the sbstances in e-cigarettes. In Korean media coverage, the public health frame competed against economic frames. Scientific studies received very little media coverage in all three countries, with the exception of epidemiological statistics. | The experimental approach to examining arguments as frames is much complexity to assess. |
