Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Synaptic membrane formation depends on nutrients that fuel metabolic pathways for the synthesis of constituent phospholipids. Consequently, insufficient availability of such nutrients may restrict membrane formation and contribute to synaptic dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We assessed whether blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of nutrients related to phospholipid synthesis differ among patients with AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and control subjects.Entities:

NOTE. Data are expressed as the mean (SD). ANOVA adjusted for age and gender and post hoc pairwise comparison (Bonferroni adjusted P values) were performed. ANOVA for plasma choline and betaine, serum bilirubin, and CSF choline and albumin were performed after Ln transformation. The concentrations of all nutrients and metabolites in control subjects in the range of absolute values that are typically reported, except for CSF betaine for which no previous reported values were found.
