Abstract
There is an increasing need for the discovery of reliable and eco-friendly pesticides and natural plant-derived products may play a crucial role as source of new active compounds. In this research, a lipophilic extract of Onosma visianii roots extract containing 12% of shikonin derivatives demonstrated significant toxicity and inhibition of oviposition against Tetranychus urticae mites. Extensive chromatographic separation allowed the isolation of 11 naphthoquinone derivatives that were identified by spectral techniques and were tested against Tetranychus urticae. All the isolated compounds presented effects against the considered mite and isobutylshikonin (1) and isovalerylshikonin (2) were the most active, being valuable model compounds for the study of new anti-mite agents.Entities:

Activity and impact on Tetranychus urticae oviposition of the Onosma visianii root extract.
| Activity | LD50 (CI95) a | LD90 (CI95) a | Chi b |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acute toxicity (tarsal test, after 24 h, μg·cm−2) | 83.2 (79.8–89.5) | 112.6 (101.5–121.8) | 0.158 |
| Chronic toxicity (tarsal test, after 5 days, μg·cm−3) | 2.6 (1.7–3.5) | 9.4 (6.2–15.5) | 0.634 |
| Oviposition inhibition (μg·cm−3) | 2.4 (2.2–3.9) | 43.5 (41.8–45.9) | 0.525 |
a LD50 and LD90 = dose in μg·cm−2 causing 50% and 90%, respectively, mortality of T. urticae adults; CI95 = 95% confidence intervals, the activity is considered significantly different when the 95% CI fail to overlap; b Chi-square value, not significant at p > 0.05 level.
