Estimates from a principal component factor analysis performed on 28 nutrients. The magnitude of each loading measures the importance of the corresponding nutrient to the factor.
Loadings greater or equal to 0.63 (in absolute value) defined dominant nutrients for each factor, and were shown in bold typeface; loadings smaller than 0.1 (in absolute value) were suppressed.

Estimates from a multiple logistic regression model adjusted for age, sex, area of residence, education, year of interview, tobacco smoking, and alcohol drinking. Results refer to the composite model including all the five factors simultaneously.
Cases within tertile categories of factor scores for each dietary pattern were as follows: Animal products (I tertile: 47, II tertile: 56; III tertile: 93); Starch rich (I tertile: 54; II tertile: 68; III tertile: 74); Vitamins and fibre (I tertile: 82; II tertile: 56; III tertile 58); AUFAs (I tertile: 5; II tertile: 52; III tertile: 89); VUFAs (I tertile: 54; II tertile: 61; III tertile: 81). As tertile categories were calculated on control subjects, the number of controls within categories was approximately of 197 for each pattern.
