Abstract
BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) around the apolipoprotein A5 gene (APOA5) have pleiotropic effects on the levels of triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). APOA5 SNPs have also been associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). Here, we constructed haplotypes with SNPs spanning APOA5 and ZNF259, which are approximately 1.3 kb apart, to perform association analyses with the risk for MS and the levels of TG and HDL-C in terms of a TG:HDL-C ratio.Entities:

Figure 1Genetic location, linkage disequilibrium (LD), and haplotypes of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). (A) The SNPs rs662799 and rs651821 are respectively located in the promoter and 5′ untranslated regions of APOA5 that has 4 exons, whereas SNP rs6589566 is found in intron 12 of ZNF259 that has 14 exons. (B) LD structure of three SNPs: D′ and r. (C) Haplotype sequence and frequency: haplotypes with frequencies over 5% were named as ht1, ht2, and ht3.
