Abstract
BACKGROUND: Mushrooms are not only regarded as gourmet cuisine but also as therapeutic agent to promote cognition health. However, little toxicological information is available regarding their safety. Therefore, the aim of this study was to screen selected ethno-pharmacologically important mushrooms for stimulatory effects on neurite outgrowth and to test for any cytotoxicity.Entities:

Figure 1Effects of different NGF concentrations (5 – 100 ng/ml) on stimulation of neurite outgrowth using differentiating N2a cells as an model. The results shown represent the mean ± SD; n = 3. Means not sharing a common letter were significantly different at p < 0.05.

Figure 3The mean neurite length of N2a treated with different mushroom extracts at 20 μg/ml. The results shown represent the mean ± SD; n = 3. Means not sharing a common letter were significantly different at p < 0.05. S = sclerotium, aq = aqueous, EtOH = ethanol.
Figure 4Phase-contrast photomicrographs showing the effects of (a) NGF, (b) , (c) , (d) , (e) , and (f) on the morphology of differentiating N2a cells after 48 h. Untreated cells serve as control (g) and only contained 5% FBS as vehicle. Arrows indicate typical neurites of N2a. Scale bar represents 20 μm. Photomicrographs of representative microscope fields were taken with a 20× objective.
Figure 5Immunocytochemical staining of neurofilament in N2a cells treated with (a) NGF, (b) , (c) , (d) , (e) , and (f) , and untreated cells as control (g). DAPI stains for nuclei blue, while anti-neurofilament 200 kD labeled with FITC stains neuronal cells green. Scale bar represents 20 μm. Arrows indicate neurite outgrowth. Photomicrographs of representative microscope fields were taken with a 20× objective.
