Abstract
BACKGROUND: Recent genome-wide association studies of colorectal cancer (CRC) have identified common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) mapping to 10 independent loci that confer modest increased risk. These studies have been conducted in European populations and it is unclear whether these observations generalise to populations with different ethnicities and rates of CRC.Entities:

Abbreviations: CI=confidence intervals; CRC=colorectal cancer; MAF=minor allele frequency; OR=odds ratio; SNP=single-nucleotide polymorphism.
Chromosomal regions were obtained from NCBI map viewer, Ideogram section.
All base pairs were according to the NCBI build 36.3 data.
Order of allele: minor allele, major allele; the allele underlined denoted high-risk allele in our study.
OR heterozygous – OR in heterozygotes, relative to common homozygotes.
OR homozygous – OR in rare homozygotes, relative to common homozygotes.
P-values were obtained by Cochrane–Armitage trend test with one degree of freedom; P-values obtained from logistic regression models were similar (data not shown). In Phase 1, if an OR had the same direction as previously reported, one-tailed P-values were calculated, i.e. P/2, conversely for ORs in the opposite direction P=1−P/2.
