Measurement of self-advocacy in cancer patients and survivors.

Carol J Hermansen-Kobulnicky1.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The Patient Self-Advocacy Scale, originally developed for use in HIV/AIDS patients, was adapted for use in cancer patients and survivors. The scale contains three dimensions: increased illness education, increased assertiveness with a doctor, and potential for mindful non-adherence. DISCUSSION AND
CONCLUSION: Evidence for modest reliability and construct validity was found; however, ceiling effects exist for the Illness Education subscale, which supports the need to move beyond items regarding information seeking to perhaps include use and management of information.
