Organisms causing Nosocomial Blood Stream Infection, Pneumonia and Endotracheal tube colonization in ventilated VLBW infants
| Episodes of Nosocomial BSI | 113 (56)a | 33 (16) | 26 (13) | 9 (4) | 6 (3) | 14 (7) |
| ETT Colonization (patients) | 136 (46) | 27 (9) | 39 (13) | 27 (9) | 14 (5) | 30 (10) |
| Episodes of Nosocomial Pneumonia | 1 (5) | 7 (32) | 10 (45) | 0 | 3 (14) | 1 (5) |
| Sepsis Related Deaths | 0 | 6 | 5 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
a Numbers represent the number of episodes of infections (blood stream and pneumonia) or the number of patients with ETT colonization by a particular organism. Numbers in parentheses represent the percentages of total infections (bacteremia and pneumonia) or percentage of all patients (ETT colonization rates). Infants may have been simultaneously or serially colonized with more than one organism, thus the sum of the organism-specific rates is greater than the overall rate of ETT colonization (49%).
CONS coagulase negative staphylococci
ETT endotracheal tube
BSI blood stream infections
