The superoxide free radical: its biochemistry and pathophysiology.

J M McCord.

Abstract

The partial reduction of molecular oxygen in biologic systems produces the cytotoxic intermediates superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical. The superoxide radical is now recognized to play significant roles in a number of pathophysiologic states including oxygen toxicity, radiation damage, phagocyte-mediated inflammation, and postischemic injury.
