Competence and deoxyribonucleic acid uptake in Bacillus subtilis.

R N Singh, M P Pitale.

Abstract

The distribution of uninucleate and multinucleate cells of Bacillus subtilis, fractionated by zonal centrifugation, shows that the uninucleate cells are most likely to be competent. Only the competent fraction of the population incorporates deoxyribonucleic acid.
