Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to advance understanding of intravenous (IV) smart pump medication administration practices using the Baxter Spectrum IQ. The primary objective was to observe adherence with manufacturer required IV smart pump system setup at the point of care during actual clinical use.Entities:

Secondary Medication Type by Therapeutic Class
| Type of Medication | n | % |
|---|---|---|
| Antibiotic | 167 | 83.5% |
| Electrolyte/vitamin | 18 | 9.0% |
| Other | 12 | 6.0% |
| Other anti-infective | 3 | 1.5% |
| Total | 200 | 100% |
Frequency Data for Additional Exploratory Variables
| n (%) | ||
|---|---|---|
| Yes | No | |
| Is recommended hanger being used to lower primary infusion? | 200 (100) | 0 (0) |
| Is hanger fully extended? | 141 (70.5) | 59 (29.5) |
| Is the secondary connect to the primary set above the infusion pump? | 195 (97.5) | 5 (2.5) |
| Does the primary tubing have a check valve? | 200 (100) | 0 (0) |
| Is the secondary unclamped? | 198 (99) | 2 (1) |
| Is there concurrent flow from the primary during secondary infusion?* | 20 (24) | 63 (76) |
| *Was the entire secondary volume administered? | 90 (61) | 57 (39) |
| *Is the secondary infusing at the primary rate?* | 12 (13.5) | 77 (86.5) |
| *Is the primary infusing at the secondary rate?* | 9 (5) | 170 (95) |
*Not all these observations occurred while the medication was actively infusing, so some aspects of these observations were recorded as uncertain, resulting in some totals that were less than 200.
