Abstract
Background: Alzheimer's disease and dementia in general constitute one of the major public health problems of the 21st century. Research in arterial stiffness and pulse pressure (PP) play an important role in the quest to reduce the risk of developing dementia through controlling modifiable risk factors. Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate the association between peripheral PP, arterial stiffness index (ASI) and brain integrity, and to discover if ASI is a better predictor of white matter integrity than peripheral PP. Two cardiovascular risk factors were fed to each stepwise linear model: PP and ASI. These models aimed to find which cardiovascular risk factors among PP and ASI best predict the fractional anisotropy (FA) of the corpus callosum (CC), internal capsule (CI), corona radiata (CR) and the white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV). Fixed covariates were age and sex. R

Values are means ± standard deviation. SBP, systolic blood pressure; DBP, diastolic blood pressure; PP, pulse pressure; FA in CC and FA in CR are fractional anisotropy of the corpus callosum, internal capsule and corona radiata, respectively; WMHV, white matter hyperintensities volume. Bold values are significant values after correction for multiple comparison.

Significant p-values are in bold (adjusted threshold with FDR was 0.025). Covariates included is sex. An additional analysis was performed with both age and sex as covariates showing similar significant results: (A) p = 0.012; (B) p = 2.65e-09.
