Abstract
BACKGROUND: Early threat detection and situational awareness are vital to achieving a comprehensive and accurate view of health-related events for federal, state, and local health agencies. Key to this are public health and syndromic surveillance systems that can analyze large data sets to discover patterns, trends, and correlations of public health significance. In 2020, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) evaluated its public health surveillance system and identified areas for improvement.Entities:

Summary Assessment of Surveillance Attributes for Praedico Surveillance System* in the Veterans Health Administration
| Surveillance Attribute | Definition | Qualitative Judgment |
|---|---|---|
Simplicity Flexibility Stability | System design, use & ease of operation Can adapt to changing needs & technology Reliability & availability of the system | Major Strengths |
Timeliness Representativeness Sensitivity Predictive Value Positive | Speed of the system, how fast data is available Degree to which the surveillance population is represented Proportion of true cases identified Proportion of reports that are true cases | Relative Strengths |
Data Quality Acceptability | Data completeness & validity User’s willingness to participate in the system | Relative Limitations |
