Abstract
BACKGROUND: In patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), volume overload is usually described as an expansion of plasma volume (PV). Additional red cell volume (RCV) expansion also occurs in a relevant fraction of compensated CHF patients. So far, little is known about the stability of these vascular volumes and possible volume excess in compensated CHF patients over time. METHODS ANDEntities:

BV, blood volume; E/e' mean, surrogate marker for diastolic function; Hbmass, total haemoglobin mass; LVEDD, left ventricular end‐diastolic diameter; PV , plasma volume; RCV, red cell volume.
Data presented mean ± SD. N indicates the number of patients. P indicates the P value. Eplerenone was not included as diuretic therapy despite mild diuretic properties. Glomerular filtration rate as estimated by the CKD‐EPI equation.
Six missing values.
Figure 1Individual excess and deficit of measured red cell volume (RCV) and plasma volume (PV) depicted as per cent of expected normal values (=100%, black dashed horizontal line) at baseline and follow‐up (first and second column of each patient), sorted in decreasing order according to RCV.
