Abstract
BACKGROUND: Exercise confers myriad health benefits and physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor for many non-communicable chronic diseases. However, individual responsiveness to guideline-based exercise programs is idiosyncratic for health and fitness outcomes. It is not known whether the response of individuals to distinct exercise modalities tend to be concordant or whether there is a genetic contribution to variation in exercise responsiveness. Fig. 2Study design schematic illustrating the longitudinal randomised cross-over exercise intervention. Monozygotic (single/solid colour) and dizygotic (multicolour) twin pairs are randomised to simultaneously participate in a 3 month supervised program, consisting of either resistance or endurance training. After a wash out period (3 months), they cross-over to complete 3 months of the alternate modality. (For interpretation of the references to colour in this figure legend, the reader is referred to the Web version of this article.)
