Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Behavioral addictions (BAs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) tend to co-occur; both are associated with mental health problems (MHPs). This study aimed to estimate the proportion of variance in the severity of MHPs explained by BAs and SUDs, individually and shared between addictions.Entities:

aThe DSM-5 moderate (4+ criteria) cut-off was preferred for AUD because mild (two or more criteria) AUD is frequent in young men (almost one third in this sample; Marmet et al., 2019). bEcstasy, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, amphetamines, methamphetamines, inhalants or solvents, ketamine, methadone, gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, research chemicals, and spice. A similar measure of the number of substances used was found to be associated with psychological distress (Booth et al., 2010).
