The pleasantness of the solution was selected using the following scale: 1, dislike extremely; 2, dislike very much; 3, dislike moderately; 4, dislike slightly; 5, neither like nor dislike; 6, like slightly; 7, like moderately; 8, like very much; 9, like extremely.
Tastant concentrations were as follows: sucrose = 0.08, 0.16, 0.32, 0.64, 1.28 molar; caffeine = 0.0026, 0.0051, 0.0102, 0.0205, 0.0410 molar; citric acid = 0.0026, 0.0051, 0.0102, 0.0205, 0.0410 molar; sodium chloride = 0.032, 0.064, 0.128, 0.256, 0.512 molar.
