Abstract
BACKGROUND: The majority of critically ill patients do not suffer from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). To improve the treatment of these patients, we aimed to identify potentially modifiable factors associated with outcome of these patients.Entities:

Mortality is defined as mortality at hospital discharge or at 90 days after start of invasive mechanical ventilatory support while still in hospital, whichever occurred first
All parameters were measured in the first day of ventilation
VD/VT was not included in the multivariable model because there were many missing values (68.8%)
Static compliance corrected by the PBW was not included in the model due to many missing values (64.8%) and to multicollinearity with Pmax (r = − 0.351; p < 0.001)
Driving pressure was excluded due to the multicollinearity with Pmax
