Abstract
In this issue of Molecular Cell, Legnini et al. (2017) and Pamudurti et al. (2017) demonstrate that endogenous circular RNAs may generate proteins, thereby expanding the eukaryotic proteome and revealing novel modes of cap-independent translation. Keywords: IRES; backsplicing; cap-independent translation; circRNA; eIF3; m6A; polysome; pre-mRNA splicing; ribosome profiling; stress
