Abstract
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at investigating the relationship between causal attributions and coping maxims in people suffering from back pain. Further, it aimed at identifying in how far causal attributions and related coping maxims would defer between immigrants and non-immigrants in Switzerland.Entities:

Long-term influence factors: “What does the improvement, or at least the not worsening, of your back pain in the long-term depend on? Please answer this question using a scale from 0 to 6 where 0 indicates "Has no influence" and 6 "Has a very strong influence”. My back pain is influenced in the long term by the following factors:…”; Short-term influence factors: “Along with the long-term influences on back pain, there may be circumstances which determine the onset or the worsening of your back pain for a short term. Please indicate to what extent the following circumstance do influence your back pain using a scale from 0 to 6 where 0 indicates “Has no influence” and 6 “Has a very strong influence”.”
Confirmatory factor analysis of coping maxims.
| Factors | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | |
| Aspiration to Improvement | Acquiescence in the Condition | Acceptance of Blame | |
| I will be able to fully enjoy life again only once I’m free of back pain. | .75 | ||
| My goal for the future is to be able to go back to doing everything that I used to do before the onset of my condition. | .69 | ||
| I should avoid movements that could worsen my pain. | .65 | ||
| The improvement of my back comes first, sometimes work must come second. | .58 | ||
| Even if others look at me in a strange way, I take measures to protect and support my back, for e.g. I sit on an exercise ball (psychomotor ball) instead of a chair. | .46 | ||
| Since people are not able to see my pain, they probably think that I am only pretending to have back pain. | .66 | ||
| When I am in pain, it makes me feel good when I can talk to other people about it. | .63 | ||
| I am more or less used to my back pain; it has become part of my life. | .41 | ||
| I feel a bit guilty because I am not doing enough for my back. | .93 | ||
| It is my own responsibility if my condition does not improve. | .47 | ||
“To what extent do the following statements apply to you? Please answer this question using a scale from 0 to 6 where 0 indicates “Not at all” and 6 “Completely”.”
