Pedicle subtraction osteotomy in the cervical spine.

Adam L Wollowick1, Michael P Kelly, K Daniel Riew.

Abstract

STUDY
DESIGN: Description of surgical technique with review of literature.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical management of cervical spine deformity, using pedicle subtraction osteotomy. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Previous articles have primarily described Smith-Petersen osteotomies and Simmons' modifications to correct fixed cervical deformity. Those were typically performed with the patient awake and sedated in a seated position and without the use of spinal instrumentation.
METHODS: Description of a single surgeon's technique for performing pedicle subtraction osteotomy to treat fixed cervical deformity.
CONCLUSION: The use of pedicle subtraction osteotomy in the cervical spine is a safe and effective procedure when performed by experienced surgeons and can result in a satisfying outcome for both the patient and the surgeon.
