Abstract
BACKGROUND: Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) is a common tropical vegetable that has been used in traditional or folk medicine to treat diabetes. Wild bitter gourd (WBG) ameliorated metabolic syndrome (MetS) in animal models. We aimed to preliminarily evaluate the effect of WBG supplementation on MetS in Taiwanese adults.Entities:

Figure 1Changes in the incidence rate of metabolic syndrome (MetS) throughout the study period. 42 subjects were supplemented with 4.8 g/d wild bitter gourd for three month. Metabolic syndrome was monitored monthly during the three-month supplementation (visit 1-4) and another three months (visit 5-7) after the supplementation ended. *p < 0.05 denotes significantly different from the baseline value (visit 1) analyzed by generalized linear mixed models after adjusting for sex and age.
