Fig. 2Immunohistochemistry of the lung specimen; the majority of the stained cells appeared to be associated with the airways, either in the abnormal looking epithelial lining or in the lumen as shed cells and debris. There is marked mismatch between the low levels and patchy nature of the viral antigen and the severe, widely distributed pathology of the lung. A striking finding is the relatively low level of lymphocyte infiltration.
