Treatment of postprostatectomy incontinence: is the bulbourethral sling a viable alternative to the artificial urinary sphincter?

Steven P Petrou1.

Abstract

The treatment of postprostatectomy incontinence continues to evolve with a notable resurgence of interest in the bulbourethral sling. This review notes the techniques used to treat this condition and the salient features of each treatment method. In addition, a comparison is made between the bulbourethral sling and the artificial urinary sphincter with a discussion of various facets of these devices. Potential advantages of the bulbourethral sling are noted.
