Abstract
There have been several clinical trials pertaining to carotid endarterectomy in the last two decades. These studies have provided long-awaited information regarding the risks and benefits of surgery for carotid stenosis. This paper outlines the key results for patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic stenosis. A scheme for the identification of patients likely to benefit from surgery, and persistent areas of controversy and uncertainty, are reviewed.Entities:
