Abstract
Proteins of the Rab and SNARE families target vesicles to their intracellular destinations. A comparison of these families from the budding yeast, fission yeast, nematode and fruitfly genomes has implications for the organization of membrane traffic in different organisms.Entities:

C. elegans and D. melanogaster proteins are named according to their close mammalian homologs. (RabX has no clear mammalian homolog at present.) Numbers shown in parentheses after gene names are GenBank accession numbers.
Figure 1Even in a simplified cell, outward membrane traffic occurs from the endoplasmic reticulum (1), through several stages of the Golgi complex (2), to the cell surface (3). Inward traffic - endocytosis - proceeds from the surface (4) to the lysosomes (5), and lysosomal proteins are delivered from the Golgi (6).
