Disability management in industry: the new paradigm in injured worker rehabilitation.

D E Shrey1.

Abstract

Trends in injured worker rehabilitation suggest a major paradigm shift from community-based services to worksite-based disability management. Employers are assuming greater control, responsibility and accountability for reducing workers' compensation costs. This article discusses the cost savings associated with effective work injury management. The essential components of an optimal disability management system are reviewed, including early intervention and critical steps in the disability management process. Strategies that impact positively on labour relations are suggested.
