Abstract
A community-wide approach offers a potentially more effective way to promote healthy babies in healthy families and to prevent low birth weight. It can address the many factors associated with preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction, the need to include all members of the community in effecting meaningful change in the incidence rate of adverse outcomes and the development of an effective mechanism to plan and coordinate the delivery of programs. Physicians have an essential role to play in this approach. The evaluation of such a program would complement current biomedical research on the prevention of preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction.
