Autism: definition, diagnosis, and management.

E Schopler, J Dalldorf.

Abstract

Recent investigations have exploded a number of misconceptions about autism. It is not a disease of the upper middle class; nor are parents etiologic agents; the children do not "tune out" but rather they never "tune in"; most important, autism is not childhood schizophrenia, and the diagnostic criteria are discriminating. Management of autism mandates close physician-family-community interactions.
