Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The pedicle morphology of ankylosing spondylitis (AS)-related thoracolumbar kyphosis patients may be different from that of individuals with normal spine due to the ectopic ossification and kyphotic deformity. However, there was no literature analyzing the pedicle morphology of AS patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the pedicle morphology of lower thoracic and lumbar spine (T9-L5) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS)-related thoracolumbar kyphosis patients.Entities:

Fig. 1Axial CT image of L4 in a 23‐year‐old male patient with AS‐related thoracolumbar kyphosis (A). The average TPA of left and right pedicles was 16.5°. The average CL (AB/2 + FG/2) was 62 mm. The average PL (BC/2 + GH/2) was 25 mm. The average TPW (DE/2 + IJ/2) was 15 mm (A); Axial CT image of L4 in a 30‐year‐old male patient with thoracic spine fracture (B). The average TPA of left and right pedicles was 22.5°. The average CL (A'B′/2 + F′G'/2) was 48.5 mm. The average PL (BC/2 + GH/2) was 17 mm. The average TPW (DE/2 + IJ/2) was 11.5 mm (B). CT indicates computed tomography; AS, ankylosing spondylitis; TPA, transverse pedicle angle; CL, chord length; PL, pedicle length; TPW, transverse pedicle width
Fig. 2Sagittal CT image of L4 in a 23‐year‐old male patient with AS‐related thoracolumbar kyphosis (A,B). The average SPA of left and right pedicles was −7°. The average PH (AB/2 + CD/2) was 16 mm (A,B); Axial CT image of L4 in a 30‐year‐old male patient with thoracic spine fracture (C,D). The average SPA of left and right pedicles was −0.5°. The average PH (A'B′/2 + C′D′/2) was 14.5 mm (C,D). CT indicates computed tomography; AS, ankylosing spondylitis; SPA, sagittal pedicle angle; PH, pedicle height
Fig. 3Comparison of radiographic parameters measured on axial CT images between AS group and fracture group. Comparison of TPA between the two groups (A); Comparison of TPW between the two groups (B); Comparison of CL between the two groups (C); Comparison of PL between the two groups (D). *Indicates a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05). TPA indicates transverse pedicle angle; TPW, transverse pedicle width; CL, chord length; PL, pedicle length; AS, ankylosing spondylitis
