Abstract
BACKGROUND: Depression is a common psychiatric condition with an estimated lifetime prevalence for major depression of 16.6% in the US adult population and is effectively treated through psychotherapy. The widespread availability of the internet and personal devices such as smartphones are changing the landscape of delivery of psychotherapy; however, little is known about whether and for whom this type of therapy is beneficial, and whether having synchronous video-based sessions provides additional benefits to clients above and beyond messaging-based therapy.Entities:

aClient n=5890, therapist n=1271. Variables that were tested and were not significant included plan type, intake PHQ-8 score, client gender, and therapist gender. Widowed data were collapsed with missing marital status data. Disengagement from treatment was defined as >4 weeks without any client-initiated communication to the therapist, such as texting, video exchanges, images, or audio clips. The modeling included up to 52 weeks of therapy.
