FIGURE 1U.S. Racial and ethnic distribution of dentist workforce and population parity, 2020. Percentages may not total 100% because of rounding. The percentage of “Hispanic/Latinx” reflects persons of this ethnicity and any race. The race categories include only non‐Hispanic persons. “Other” race and ethnicity category is a combination of non‐Hispanic “some other race” and non‐Hispanic “two and more races” for the U.S. population and an aggregation of “other” and “do not wish to report or unknown” for professionally active dentists. American Dental Association does not collect data for a “two or more races” category. [Color figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com]
FIGURE 2Full‐time and part‐time dental school faculty by race and ethnicity, 2011–2012 and 2018–2019. Percentages may not total 100% because of rounding. The 2011–2012 year is the first time that ADEA followed the 2007 revised U.S. Department of Education's federal guidelines on race/ethnicity in the collection and reporting of data for the ADEA Survey of Dental School Faculty. The percentage of faculty that the dental school representatives reported in the “do not wish to report” category soared between 2011‐2012 and 2018‐2019, from 3.5% to 10.6%.
