Abstract
BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. We aim to assess the frequency, clinical characteristics, biochemical findings, and outcomes of DKA at the onset of T1DM in young children and adolescents. DESIGN AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed the medical records of patients ≤ 16 years old seen in the emergency department at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between April 2015 and June 2019. The severity of DKA was classified according to the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) criteria.Entities:
