COVID-19 causes a microvascular disorder that affects the retina in many ways.
Understanding the long-term effects of COVID-19 remains an unmet need.
Understanding how the body's microvasculature can be affected by COVID-19 could affect future treatment.
Optical coherence tomography angiography scans show reduced central retinal vascular density, a thinner ganglion cell layer, a thicker retinal nerve fibre layer, and an enlarged foveal avascular zone. Optical coherence tomography scans demonstrate thicker central macular thickness and changes to the macula, ganglion cell, and inner nuclear layers. Many fundus photographs depicted cotton wool spots as well as vascular occlusions.
