Abstract
BACKGROUND: Perfectionism, low self-esteem and external locus of control are psychological constructs linked to insomnia, anxiety and depression. Examining how these constructs impact mental health and serve as risk factors for the development of clinically significant symptoms may help direct psychological support resources and preventative measures for university students. AIMS: To longitudinally examine associations between the aforementioned psychological constructs and symptoms of insomnia, anxiety and depression in a large representative sample of first-year university students.Entities:

Fig. 1Proposed model of the effects of external locus of control (LOC), perfectionism and low self-esteem on the development of insomnia, anxiety and depression. Based on existing models of insomnia.[13,21]
Fig. 2Number of responses included for all inclusion criteria. Percentages are of all first-year students. aVariables of interest were complete. bReduced response rate likely because of COVID-19. cAged 17-22 years, inclusive. dExcluding self-reported transgender, genderfluid, non-binary or other gender identity.
