This sum can be rewritten as AUC = [1–(1–a)]•b + (1–a)•b/2 + [1–(1–a)]•(1–b)/2 = a•b + (b–a•b)/2 + (a–a•b)/2 = (a + b)/2, which is the average of the marker’s sensitivity and specificity. The AUC of a dichotomous marker is the sum of the area of one rectangle and two triangles.
