Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) represents an essential cause of drug-resistant epilepsy with surgery as an effective treatment option. This study aimed to identify the important predictors of favorable surgical outcomes and the impact of the interictal scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns in predicting postsurgical seizure outcomes.Entities:

FIGURE 1Example of the characteristic interictal scalp EEG patterns of FCD: (A) trains of repetitive, rhythmic 4‐ to 10‐Hz sharp waves or spikes lasting 1‐4 seconds (RED type 1); (B) quasicontinuous, slower, rhythmic 2‐ to 7‐Hz sharp wave activity (RED type 2); (C) focal, fast, continuous spikes; (D) FREDs; (E) continuous epileptiform discharges occupying > 80% of the recording; (F) repetitive discharges lasting 5 seconds or more; (G) brushes; (H) polyspikes of at least three consecutive spikes with the frequency of at least 10 Hz lasting at least 300 ms; (I) FRBEA. Each interictal scalp EEG patterns of FCD are indicated with red arrows. (C) and (D): Scalp EEG showing the coexistence of polyspikes (C) and focal, fast, continuous spikes (D) at electrodes F4, C4, F8, and Fz in a patient with FCD (red arrows). Abbreviations: EEG, electroencephalogram; ECG, electrocardiogram; FCD, focal cortical dysplasia; HF, high‐frequency filters; LF, low‐frequency filters; PDP, polyspike discharge pattern; REDP, repetitive discharge pattern; RED, repetitive discharge; SENS, sensitivity
