Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Delirium is a common postoperative complication of hip fracture. Various methods exist to detect delirium as a reference standard. The goal of this study was to characterize the properties of the measures obtained in a randomized controlled trial, to document their relationship to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders:Text Revision based diagnosis of postoperative delirium by a consensus panel, and to describe the method in detail to allow replication by others.Entities:

Abbreviation: IQCODE, Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly.
SD: standard deviation.
ASA: American Society of Anesthesiologists.
ADL: Activities of Daily Living is based on the Physical Self‐Maintenance Scale (PSMS), which is scored from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 6 which indicates full independence.
IADL: Instrumental Activities of Daily Living is scored from 0 to 8 with 8 indicating full independence.
IQCODE: Short Form of the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly Informant Questionnaire.
Raw test scores for verbal fluency and digit span were transformed to T scores based upon population norms standardized for age, sex, education, and race with mean = 50 and SD = 10.
MMSE: Mini‐mental state examination scores range from 0 to 30 with 30 indicating good cognitive function; p‐values are calculated from Fisher's Exact test, t‐test or a Wilcoxon rank‐sum test.
