This editorial celebrates an important milestone for JID Innovations: We are publishing the first online issue of the journal. Since our launch in October, we have received 81 submissions, with 5 manuscripts having been accepted and published in this first issue, another 8 in press, and another 46 under revision or in review. Reaching this point is the result of the hard work of many individuals. We have assembled a talented editorial board, engaged many thoughtful reviewers, have a very skilled and dedicated editorial office, and the strong support of our publisher, Elsevier. Together this team has demonstrated a commitment to our goal of bringing to our community high quality, peer-reviewed research across the entire spectrum of skin biology. Publishing a gold open access journal has indeed been an innovation for the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the European Society for Dermatological Research. Indeed, the title of JID Innovations was chosen to highlight that we strive to be innovative in our scope “from molecules to population health,” in the submission process, “your manuscript your way,” and in our encouragement of manuscripts from authors around the world. We have also strived to be innovative in how we evaluate manuscripts submitted to JID Innovations. In all instances, our reviewers and editors have embraced the concept that we will evaluate manuscripts based on whether they address important questions and use rigorous and appropriate methods to answers those questions. To paraphrase Pierre-Marc-Gaston Duc de Levis, we believe that in evaluating manuscripts, “It is best to judge the manuscript by the questions it addresses rather than the answers that are uncovered.” At JID Innovations, we feel that studies that address important questions provide critical information for the advancement of science even if the expected result is not achieved. JID Innovations believes that exceptionally important questions can be explored in many types of studies. Important questions are found in studies in which the results reject an important hypothesis, resulting in a ”negative” study; in small but well-focused clinical trials; and occasionally in studies that fail to replicate or reproduce current dogma despite using the most appropriate methods. In publishing a study that addresses a truly important question, JID Innovations is participating in a most fundamental and joyous process in science, asking a question and ultimately evaluating the answer (Vale, 2013). We look forward to seeing manuscripts addressing the most important questions in skin biology and dermatology, from molecules to population health. “The important thing is to never stop questioning.” (Albert Einstein). As important as the quality of the question and the proposed answer are, the total value of any scientific work cannot be realized until the results are shared. Indeed, the advancement of science is dependent upon sharing. (Milkman and Berger, 2014). Sharing science is a core value for JID Innovations. We are committed to ensuring that the work of our authors is quickly available to not only our basic, translational, and clinical scientific communities but also to the general public. Sharing scientific results is important to our disciplines. It allows for the replication of results, documents the reproducibility of methods, and ultimately creates the pathway leading to scientific truth. Sharing of our results, both positive and negative, allows knowledge to grow and science to advance. It is not enough, however, to facilitate sharing within our scientific communities. We must also facilitate sharing with society—including both policymakers and the public at large. Making our studies open to all is the pathway toward developing a better societal understanding of the scientific process; ultimately, this will increase the public’s confidence in the results of high-quality science. This open sharing of science—and the anticipated, resulting increase in public trust—can only help scientific discovery drive changes in behavior, policy, and ultimately health. JID Innovations will strive to be a strong leader in sharing scientific discovery. The first issue of JID Innovations is the starting point of a long journey. We will be publishing studies that address critical questions in skin sciences, from molecules to population health. We will facilitate the sharing of these findings with not only our communities of scientists but also with the public. Through this process, I am convinced that together we will advance scientific discovery, hasten its translation to advance the treatment of disease, and celebrate the joy of questioning and discovery. I look forward to working with each of you on these innovations in the months ahead.
