Fig. 1.Flow chart showing the patient selection process. Among the 214 preterm infants with a GA<32 weeks admitted between September 2017 and December 2020, 59 were excluded because they were transferred to other hospitals (16 infants), died (26 infants), or were not screened (17 infants). Ten of the 155 infants were assigned to the treated group, 13 were assigned to the observation group, and 132 were assigned to the normal group. Finally, 10 infants were treated for DDH, while 145 (observation and normal groups) were not treated for DDH. GA, gestational age; DDH, developmental dysplasia of the hip.
Recommended indications and screening timing for hip ultrasonography
| Indications for hip ultrasonography | |
| Abnormal clinical findings of the hip [ | |
| Risk factors: female, breech presentation, family history of DDH, oligohydramnios, intrauterine causes of postural molding, neuromuscular disease [ | |
| Risk factors: female, breech presentation, family history of DDH [ | |
| Screening time of ultrasonography: postnatal days | |
| At 4–6 weeks after birth [ | |
| Not performed at younger than 3–4 weeks after birth, unless there are abnormal clinical findings [ | |
| Not performed at younger than 6 weeks after birth, unless there are abnormal clinical findings [ | |
| At 6–8 weeks after birth (universal screening) [ | |
| Not performed at the first 2 weeks after birth [ | |
| Not performed during the first 4 weeks after birth (routine screening) [ | |
| Selective ultrasonography at 3–4 weeks after birth, if there are suspicious clinical findings [ | |
| Selective ultrasonography at 6 weeks–6 months for high-risk infants without positive clinical findings [ | |
| Screening time of ultrasonography: postmenstrual age | |
| Should be scheduled beyond 44 weeks of postmenstrual age (Screening at <40 weeks of postmenstrual age is too early) [ | |
