Figure 1Pleiotropic effects of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). HO-1 has both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cancer. It inhibits vascular disease, inflammation, COVID-19, and cardiovascular disease. It can be upregulated by a wide variety of dietary supplements. Enhancement of HO-1 activity increases carbon monoxide, which is a potent anti-inflammatory molecule, and increases the levels of bilirubin which are also augmented by exercise. Arrows indicate increased activity, lines with bars indicate inhibitory actions, and dashed lines indicate unknown function. Figure created with Biorender.com.
