Abstract
AIMS: Health literacy (HL) is a health determinant in cardiovascular diseases as the active participation of patients is essential for optimizing self-management of these conditions. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of low HL level in patients hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and explore low HL determinants. Physical activity is described according to frequency and intensity. Low: no physical activity or light exertion such as walking your dog or slow walking; moderate: at least 30 min three times a week or activities like dancing or gardening; and high: 30 min a day every day or three times a week of intense activity (e.g. running and team sport).
Patients were asked ‘Did you receive any information at the hospital (about treatments, pathology, future appointments etc.)?’ (answer yes or no).
Patients were asked ‘Do you receive any help in taking the treatments?’ (answer yes or no).
Prevalence of low health literacy (Brief Health Literacy Screen score ≤9) in the whole sample and in the two cardiovascular disease groups, stratified on sex, age, and first hospitalization (yes/no)
