| In Colombia, occupational exposure to solvents constitutes a public health problem. Most of the car paint shops in which these solvents are used belong to the informal sector of the economy and, despite the studies that have been carried out on this topic in various countries of the world, including Colombia, the relationship between CYP2E1 polymorphisms and the presence of micronucleus in car paint workers has not been examined, a relationship that could be used as a biomarker of genotoxic damage and a predictor of cancer risk |

| We report a high degree of genotoxicity attributed to the use of organic solvents in the car paint preparation process, based on significant differences that we found in the frequencies of micronucleated cells and nucleoplasmic bridges between exposed and non-exposed individuals. | En Colombia la exposición ocupacional a solventes constituye un problema de salud pública. La mayoría de los talleres de pintura de automóviles en los que se utilizan estos solventes pertenece al sector informal de la economía y, a pesar de los estudios que en diversos países del mundo se han llevado a cabo sobre este tópico, incluyendo a Colombia, la relación entre los polimorfismos CYP2E1 y la presencia de micronúcleos en trabajadores de pintura de carros no ha sido examinada, relación que podría ser usada como un biomarcador de daño genotóxico y predictor de riesgo de cáncer |
| Reportamos un alto grado de genotoxicidad atribuida al uso de los solventes orgánicos en el proceso de preparación de pintura de carros, con base en las diferencias significativas que hallamos en las frecuencias de células micronucleadas y puentes nucleoplásmicos entre los individuos expuestos y los no expuestos. En adición, encontramos que los trabajadores expuestos que presentaban polimorfismos de CYP2E1, específicamente el genotipo c1c1, tienen mayor probabilidad de presentar mutaciones en las células somáticas |
