Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Antrochoanal polyp (ACP) is a benign soft tissue lesion arising from the inner wall of the maxillary sinus that extends into the nasal cavity and choana. Although it was first explained by Killian in 1906, the underlying pathogenesis has not been yet fully understood. Neurotrophins have been demonstrated to have a possible role in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis, idiopathic rhinitis and nasal polyps. To date any study has not investigated the function of neuronal inflammation and neurotrophins in the development of ACP. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible effect of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) in ACP pathogenesis.Entities:

Figure 1Weak staining (+1) with NT-3 in the interstitial matrix (arrow) of the patient’s nasal mucosa (x200, NT-3).
Figure 2Strong staining (+3) with NT-3 in the interstitial matrix (arrow) of the patient’s nasal mucosa (x200, NT-3).
Comparison of serum Neurotrophin 3 levels and tissue Neurotrophin staining scores of the patients were presented.

Figure 3Comparison of tissue Neurotrophin 3 staining scores between two groups has been demonstrated. (NT-3: Neurotrophin 3, ACP: antrochoanal polyp).
Figure 4Comparison of serum Neurotrophin 3 levels between groups was presented. (NT-3: Neurotrophin 3, ACP: antrochoanal polyp).
