Abstract
BACKGROUND: Literature suggests that most mental disorders have their onset in childhood and adolescence, but go undiagnosed until adulthood. Shorter versions of the screening tools such as the Patient Health Questionnaire with four items (PHQ-4) may help to improve screening coverage. This study assessed the psychometric properties of the PHQ-4 in screening for core symptoms of depression and anxiety among out of school adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).Entities:

Scale items scored 0, 1, 2, 3 based on responses provided (not at all, several days, more than half the days, and nearly every day).
Correlation between the item and the total score from the scale (i.e. the item itself is included in the total); Correlation between the item and the overall score from the scale (i.e. the item itself is not included in the total)

How difficult have these problems (anxiety and/ or depression) made it for you to do your work, take care of things at home, or get along with other people? (No = Not difficult at all, yes = somewhat difficult /very difficult/extremely difficult); Scores for individuals with social function problem were significantly higher compared to those who did not have (p < 0.01)
Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you had thoughts that you would be better off dead or of hurting yourself in some way? (No = Not at all, yes = several days/more than half the days/nearly every day); Scores for individuals with suicidal thoughts were significantly higher compared to those who did not have (p < 0.01)
