An overview of carbapenemase producing enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in trauma and orthopaedics.

Luke D Hughes1, Ahmed Aljawadi1, Anand Pillai1.

Abstract

Carbapenemase resistant enterobacteriae (CPE) may be found in asymptomatic carriers. Its incidence is increasing worldwide. Surgical patients are at increased risk of immunocompromise and of carriage progressing to active infection. Active infection with CPE caries a high mortality rate, with the bacteria being resistant to many antibiotics. This article provides details on the epidemiology, screening and management of the orthopaedic patient with CPE. The guidelines advise orthopaedic staff on ways to avoid the spread of CPE amongst inpatients. Crown
