The new guidelines have removed the term “severe sepsis” and require evidence of organ dysfunction in order for a patient to be classed as being septic.

*These parameters have been advocated for use in all obstetric units by the RCOG to identify critical illness in the pregnant population early and to facilitate early intervention and response by senior doctors.
